Make Sure You Don't Get Hacked On A Wi-Fi Hotspot – “When You Least Expect It”

Wi-Fi hotspots provide everyone with a convenient and relaxing way to connect to the Internet. Whether you're in a coffee shop, sipping on a mocha latte while chatting online with a friend, or feverishly working in a library conducting research and writing a term paper. Unfortunately, you may not be the only one using the convenience of a Wi-Fi hotspot for your own personal needs.

Cyber criminals are now finding ways to exploit open Wi-Fi hotspots to steal your credit cards and break into your computer. They use tactics such as setting up impostor hotspots, sniff your website traffic as it's transmitted to a hotspot or even use a hotspot's network to connect directly to your computer.

While this may all sound scary, these threats shouldn't prevent you from using Wi-Fi hotspots. There are simple steps you can take to minimize your risk, and severely decrease your chances of becoming a victim of cyber crime. If you follow these tips and protect yourself, the odds are your financial information and computer will remain safe and secure.

  1. Connect only to legitimate wi-fi hot-spots - "Know your network"
  2. Encrypt sensitive data
  3. Use and update your Anti-virus software
  4. Use a firewall
  5. Update your operating system
