1. Encrypt sensitive data
In an event that an identity thief or hacker breaks through your first line of defense and gets you to connect to an impostor hot-spot, protect your sensitive data and bank account information through encryption. Encryption programs encode data or make it unreadable until you enter a password or encryption key. Without the password a hacker or identity thief will not be able to read or use your encrypted data.
Some encryption programs are built into popular financial and database software and some broadband providers now include encryption for wireless networks as a part of their service. Simply check your software's owner's manual to find out if this feature is available and how to turn it on. However, in some cases you may need an additional program to properly encrypt your sensitive data.
- Use and update your Anti-virus software
