What Businesses Can Do

A successful business is a trusted brand that protects customer and employee data, privacy and security. As a business owner or employee, you want to keep your valuable intellectual property from falling into the wrong hands. Do your part to build a safe and secure internet that protects and helps grow your business. Consider doing the following during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
- Join the national campaign for cybersecurity education and awareness: STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Get details at www.stopthinkconnect.org.
- Publish the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tips and advice (http://www.staysafeonline.org/tools-resources/stop-think-connect) in employee handbooks, company newsletters, website, and/or through posters and handouts around the office.
- Review the 2010 NCSA/VISA Inc. Small Business Study to see how your Internet security practices stack up against your peers (http://www.staysafeonline.org/sites/default/files/resource_documents/2010_Full_Small_Business_Study_FINAL11%2023_0.pdf).
- Develop internet security policies for your business and train your staff. The US Chamber of Commerce’s Internet Security Essentials for Business is a great resource (http://www.uschamber.com/issues/technology/internet-security-essentials-business). If you already have Internet security policies, review and update them to ensure they address current threats and best practices.
- Create a plan in the event of a data loss. Check out the Debix Data Breach Incident Response Workbook for ideas (http://www.debix.com/workbook/index.php).
- Encourage IT professionals at your workplace to visit schools and teach classes using NCSA’s CSAVE curriculum (http://www.staysafeonline.org/in-the-classroom/c-save). It’s easy, age appropriate and a fun way to educate kids about online safety.
- Become a fan of the NCSA Facebook page (www.facebook.com/staysafeonline) and the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/STOPTHINKCONNECT).
- Blog about cybersecurity throughout the month. Use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to disseminate information and encourage customers and employees to learn more about staying safe online. Feel free to use content found at www.staysafeonline.org.
