What Libraries Can Do
Sun, 09/19/2010 - 16:50
Libraries are a wonderful resource for communities. They provide endless volumes of information, a quiet haven in which to study, and a source of reliable information for the public. For many, the local library has also become the place to access computers and the Internet. As a result, libraries have the opportunity to become an information source on how to be safe and secure online. Consider doing the following during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
- Join the national campaign for cybersecurity education and awareness: STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Get details at www.stopthinkconnect.org.
- Place the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tips and advice (http://www.staysafeonline.org/tools-resources/stop-think-connect) by the public and staff computers, post the NCSAM posters in the library and put the NCSAM banners on the library Web site.
- Write an article on cybersecurity that incorporates the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tips and advice for your library’s newsletter. You can use information found at www.staysafeonline.org or www.stopthinkconnect.org.
- Hold a brown bag lunch for library employees to review your computer security and acceptable use policies. Distribute the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tips and advice to your employees.
- Host a series of cybersecurity educational events for your patrons on topics such as securing technology at home, keeping kids safe online, online safety for seniors, cybersecurity for small business, and careers in cybersecurity.
- Hand out a National Cybersecurity Awareness Month bookmark with every book.
- Review your collection to be sure you have current books about online safety for kids and parents and books about cybersecurity in general. Create a special display of these books in honor of the month.
- Review the library’s computer security policies and make sure they are up-to-date. Make sure all software is kept up-to-date and that computers are off when the library is closed.
- Become a fan of the NCSA Facebook page (www.facebook.com/staysafeonline) and STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/STOPTHINKCONNECT).
- Blog about cybersecurity throughout the month. Use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to disseminate information and encourage patrons to learn more about staying safe online. Feel free to use content found at www.staysafeonline.org.
