Consumer & Business Resources

Raising awareness about privacy is a primary goal of the global Data Privacy Day initiative.

People can begin to take steps to protect their privacy when they understand the risks to privacy that various technologies can pose.  When companies make their collection, use and disclosure of personal data transparent, consumers can make more informed choices about the services they are comfortable using and the information they are comfortable sharing.

These pages offer resources for consumers and businesses regarding a wide variety of technologies and services that affect privacy: location-based technologies; mobile devices; social media; health care; smart grid; cookies and behavioral tracking; identity theft; information security; document destruction; privacy risks associated with digital copiers; data breach; compliance; risk management, and many general privacy education sites and guides.

There are numerous nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to protecting the privacy of personal information, that conduct privacy research, and that provide consumers with information about a spectrum of privacy issues.

You can find more information about these nonprofits and their resources on our Non-Profit Resources page.
